About us
Block Paving for Milton Keynes Homes, Built From the Ground Up
Maybe you're parking on the road because your house came with a parking court and a strip of lawn. Maybe your drive only takes one car when you've got two. Or maybe the block paving you've had for twenty years has dipped at the edges, gone green and sprouted weeds between every joint. Block Paving Milton Keynes lays new block paving driveways, widens and extends existing drives, and repairs, patios and paths for homeowners across Milton Keynes and the towns around it.
A new block paving driveway is a big investment, and it should last decades. Most of that comes down to what happens before a single block goes down: how deep the dig-out goes, how well the sub-base is compacted, what holds the edges in and where the rainwater ends up. We price every one of those things separately, so you can see exactly what you're paying for.

The groundwork
What's Under Your Drive Matters Most
When a block paved drive sinks, ruts or spreads, the blocks are rarely to blame. It's almost always the layers underneath. This is how we build every drive:

Dig Out
We excavate the old surface, the topsoil and any soft ground, typically down to around 200 mm for a drive that takes cars, deeper where the ground is soft. All spoil is taken away.
Sub-Base
We lay crushed stone sub-base (MOT Type 1) in layers and compact each one with a plate compactor. It's the structural part of your drive, and it's where cheap jobs cut corners.
Edge Restraints
Kerbs or edging blocks are set in concrete around the edges. Without them, block paving slowly spreads outwards and the joints open up.
Laying Course and Blocks
A screeded bed of sharp sand goes down to the right levels and falls, so water runs away from the house. Then the blocks are laid in your chosen pattern.
Jointing and Compaction
Kiln-dried sand is brushed into the joints and the whole surface is compacted. That locks the blocks together so they work as one surface.

Prices
What Does a Block Paving Driveway Cost in Milton Keynes?
The two things that move the price most are the size of the area and how much digging out it needs. Turning a front lawn into a drive means taking out more soil than replacing an old drive on firm ground. These are typical prices for a new block paving driveway in Milton Keynes, including dig-out, sub-base, edging and laying:
1-car drive (about 30 m²)
£2,400 – £3,900
2-car drive (about 50 m²)
£4,000 – £6,500
Large drive (about 80 m²)
£6,400 – £10,400
Typical Milton Keynes prices for a new drive in standard concrete block. Premium and clay blocks cost more. Your price is confirmed in writing after a free site visit.
The full breakdown, with per-m² prices and the extras that change the total, is on our block paving driveway cost guide. Or we can come and price your own drive.
Comparing surfaces
Block Paving, Tarmac or Resin?
Block paving isn't the only way to surface a drive, and it isn't always the cheapest. Here's how it compares with the other two options most people weigh up:
Block Paving
It's mid-priced and lasts 20 to 25 years or more on a good base. Its big advantage is that it's repairable: if one area sinks or a block cracks, that area can be lifted and relaid with the same blocks. It comes in the widest choice of colours and patterns. The downside is that weeds can root in the joints unless they're kept topped up with sand.
Tarmac
Tarmac is usually cheaper per square metre and quick to lay. It looks plain, though, it can soften in hot weather and show tyre marks, and patch repairs rarely match the rest of the drive.
Resin
Resin gives a smooth, seamless, permeable finish with no joints. It typically costs more upfront, needs a sound base, and is harder to patch invisibly.
If you're torn between them, ask us at the site visit. We'll tell you honestly which suits your house and your budget.

Why us
Reasons Homeowners Pick Us
Groundwork Done Properly
Proper dig-out depth, compacted layers of sub-base and edges set in concrete. That's the part of the job you'll never see again, and the part that decides how long your drive lasts.
One Itemised Price
Your quote lists excavation, sub-base, edging, drainage and blocks separately, so you can compare like for like. If we hit something unexpected underground, we stop and talk to you before doing anything extra.
Patterns and Blocks to Suit Your House
Herringbone, stretcher bond or basket weave, in concrete, tumbled or clay blocks, with a contrasting border if you want one. We'll bring samples so you can see them against your brickwork.
We Leave the Street Clean
Skips and grab lorries are booked so they don't block your neighbours in, the pavement is kept passable, and the site is swept at the end of each day.
The process
From First Call to Finished Drive
Site visit and measure
We look at the area, check levels and drainage, and talk about how you'll use it: cars, bins, bikes and the route to the front door.
Itemised quote
You get a written quote with every stage priced, plus block samples and pattern options.
Dig out and build
Excavation, sub-base, edging and any drainage go in first, then the laying course and blocks.
Final sweep and walk-round
We joint and compact the surface, clear the site and walk it with you before we leave. A new block paved drive can usually be driven on the same day it's finished.
FAQs
Common Block Paving Questions
Is block paving cheaper than tarmac?
Usually not. Tarmac tends to be cheaper per square metre. But block paving lasts as long or longer, and damaged areas can be lifted and relaid with the same blocks, which tarmac can't match.
How long does a block paving driveway last?
On a properly dug and compacted base, typically 20 to 25 years or more. The blocks themselves rarely wear out. Problems almost always come from a thin or poorly compacted sub-base.
Do I need planning permission for a new drive?
Usually not, if the surface is permeable or the water drains onto a lawn or border within your property. In England, a new hard surface over 5 m² in a front garden that drains onto the road needs planning permission. Permeable block paving is one way to meet the rule. If you need a new dropped kerb, that's a separate application to the council.
How long does it take to lay?
A typical two-car drive takes three to five days, depending on the size, the dig-out and the weather. Patios and paths are usually one to three days.
Will weeds grow through?
Weeds don't push up through a properly laid drive. They grow from seeds that land in the joints. Keeping the joints full of sand and giving the drive an occasional brush stops most of them.
Local
Rooted in Milton Keynes' Estates
Our team live in Wolverton, Kempston, Woburn Sands and Buckingham, and between us we've worked on drives in just about every grid square of the city. We know the parking courts of the older estates, the narrow developer drives of the new ones, and the clay that sits under most of them. A new drive is something the whole street sees, so we talk to the neighbours before the digger arrives and leave the pavement as we found it.
